Why is health the chosen specialism of the Academy?
The health service is working hard to promote the lifestyle, fitness and health of children, young people and adults across Manchester and MHA will play a key part in this work. Health is one of the biggest employment sectors within the city of Manchester and beyond, and it needs a modern and reformed workforce. There are so many great job and career opportunities related to health and, with our lead sponsor CMFT, we want to work with young people in Wythenshawe and across Manchester to ensure they have access to these jobs and are well equipped for them.
Should we expect our children to end up working in hospitals?
No, not necessarily. We will be using ‘health’ as a specialism to build self esteem, to improve teaching and learning and to excite and interest our students. We will, of course, continue to emphasise the need for high levels of achievement in English, maths and the sciences, as well as promote other subjects. Our students will be aware of health-related issues and will have opportunities to become involved in the industry, but there will be so many other opportunities as well.
What happens to the Brookway High School’s current specialism of sport?
The existing sports specialism complements the new health specialism and will be retained. Our aim is to encourage healthy living for all.
Will the uniforms change?
Yes, but there will be funds for all parents of existing students. Consultation with our children and design companies are well advanced. The new uniform designs will be published as soon as possible and we will be working with a local outlet and the manufacturers to make them available by May.
Will there be Free School Meals (FSM)?
Exactly the same system will be employed in respect of FSM.
Will my son’s/daughter’s education be disrupted if they currently attend Brookway High School?
No. Conditions, experiences, the culture and our ethos will all improve and we are carefully planning a smooth transition to ensure little disruption. Subjects started at exam level will be continued. At MHA, it is our intention to make students’ learning experiences and opportunities far better than those at Brookway High School.
Is MHA going to be selective, privately funded or not inclusive?
MHA is open to all and will be totally inclusive, non-selective and funded directly by the Government. We are a state funded school.
