Creature Comforts

Students were variously scared, enchanted, disgusted and amazed when Zoolab brought their creepy crawlies in to the Academy to meet them last week.  The students were invited to handle several creatures including a rat, a millipede, a giant snail and a large cockroach.  It was a real hands-on learning experience that generated discussions about habitats, predators, feeding and reproduction.  Did you know that the giant snail has approximately 10,000 teeth on its tongue and will eat another snail’s shell if it cannot find enough calcium to eat?  Or that cockroaches get drunk if they eat cucumber?

Year 9 student, Yousif, said “I held the cockroach, but I don’t like the giant snail.  It has been really fun and interesting.”
