Boys in Years 8 and 9 attended health and wellbeing workshops run by Gold Medal winning boxer Courtney Fry this term. During the workshops they were encouraged, through positive interactions, to think about their wellbeing and aspirational levels and future employment. Courtney also held a question and answer session with the boys, focusing on their aspirations, sharing the challenges he experienced during his teenage years.
After hanging up his boxing gloves in 2011, Courtney has worked with young people for a number of years and has gained his Level 3 in Sports Mentoring. He now works for Sky Sports Living for Sport as an Ambassador. He commented: “My experience as a mentor has taught me how sport really can engage young people and motivate them to make changes in their lives.” Student Jake Comer said “It was an amazing experience and great to meet a guy who was able to share his stories to help us overcome our own personal problems and aim to be successful in the future”.
