Manchester Health Academy students had the pleasure of working with Manchester poet Mike Garry, focussing on literacy, oracy, creativity, confidence and aspiration recently.
His energetic, thought provoking and engaging sessions had students captivated, with student Wezlee describing the sessions as “inspiring, fun and engaging”, saying that they really helped him to be more creative and to approach exam texts with more confidence.
Students heard Mike read from a collection of his own poetry , which he used to draw out student’s thoughts on themselves, their sense of place and how the words and sounds of poetry affected them. Students used this as stimulus for their own writing, which was then shared with classmates. The students were captivated by Mike’s inimitable style and infectious zeal for his subject.
Curriculum Lead for English, Mrs Cates, said “It’s a privilege to watch students be inspired to write and, more importantly, to believe in themselves by Mike. These sessions are invaluable”. Mike countered that it is the Academy students themselves who are inspirational, describing it as an “honour” to work with them.
